Founder and Owner
Carolin K. Shining is an accomplished solo attorney with over twenty-five years of experience in private practice. She has been in solo practice since in 2012 and engages in a wide range of subject areas including business litigation and intellectual property. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Law (J.D., 1990) and Michigan State University (B.Sc., Biochemistry, 1987). She has been a Registered Patent Attorney since 1990 and is licensed to practice law in California, Illinois and before numerous federal district courts.
In addition to counseling clients as to patents, trademark, copyrights and licensing, Ms. Shining is an experienced litigator. In the 2000s and 2010s, she was a part of teams that produced over $50 million in verdicts and settlements in complex multi-party litigation. Her litigation experience ranges from business, constitutional tax matters, personal injury, toxic torts, conservatorship and trust and business litigation.
In 2020, Ms. Shining was appointed to be a member of the State Bar of California’s Para-professional Working Group. This group has been tasked by the State Bar with creating regulations and statutory revisions necessary to create, train and recruit experienced paralegals to responsibly and ethically perform services needed by pro bono and low income persons with legal needs that are currently unmet in California.
In addition, she is an active member of numerous bar associations, including the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC), Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA), Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA), Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles (WLALA) and the California Conference of Bar Associations (CCBA). She serves on the Executive Committee of LACBA’s Small Firm and Solo Practitioner Section, the LACBA President’s Commission on Women and the Law, the Diversity and Inclusion Award Committee and the Attorney Wellness Committee.
Ms. Shining is a regular speaker on a wide variety of legal issues throughout California and at the Los Angeles Law Library. Her recent presentations include “Patents and Trademarks for Business Owners 101”, “Avoiding and Lifting Defaults: a Primer for the Consumer and Small Business Owner” and “Discovery Basics for Non-Lawyers.” She also has spoken widely on issues of wellness and healthy practices for lawyers – her focus has recently shifted to the
Ms. Shining has written numerous articles for publications including the Advocate, the CAOC Forum and the Los Angeles Daily Journal. She is currently working on an article for the Los Angeles County Bar Association on “Civility in the Age of COVID-19 — a Guide for Lawyers”.
A founding member of the Outside Counsel Network, Ms. Shining is part of their on-going lecture series for lawyers and the general public.
